North Jersey Notes: Moth Eater

After seeing that half of one of my favorite local bands, Dirty Rig, was playing with NYC’s Killcode (Chaz and Tom), I wondered what happened to the other half of Dirty Rig. After much investigating, I tracked down former bassist Steve “Buckshot” Seabury and former drummer Dave Ardolina, and found them in what they’re calling Beers Village, NY, playing with a band called Moth Eater. Moth Eater is without a doubt a far cry from Dirty Rig musically, but if you listen really close to that rhythm section, you can tell that it’s Buckshot and Dave!

Moth Eater is a brand new NYC-based self-proclaimed metal and doom band. They recently posted a few tracks on their MySpace page that they wrote and recorded within the band’s first eight rehearsals. Those rehearsals and writing sessions were documented and may show up on YouTube or even a DVD at a later date. As they continue to write, Moth Eater ventured into the recording studio this past summer to record a full-length CD that they hope to release sometime this fall or winter. Besides Buckshot on bass and Dave on drums, Moth Eater consists of death metal and hardcore singer John Alaia from the band Year Of Confession and death metal and hardcore guitarist John Conley from Century Media Recording artist Scar Culture. The mix of musical styles definitely makes for some interesting music.

If you log onto Moth Eater’s MySpace page, myspace.com/motheater667, you can hear clips from tracks like “Motha Chunga,” “Lead Belly’s Revenge,” and “The Thunder Gods Of Monster Island.” There are no vocals on these tracks, but you can hear these bone crushing grooves of doom that seemed very signature of Buckshot and Dave, but were well-colored in by guitarist John Conley with his leads. Moth Eater has also posted a three-minute video titled “The Writing Sessions.” Part One which was filmed during some intoxicating first rehearsals for the band.

North Jersey Notes Updates

The boys from Ape Fight recently threw a party in South Hackensack, NJ, where they rehearsed songs from their upcoming CD, Take Me To Your Beaver. The guys from Ape Fight have been renting out an old strip club to rehearse at, so they decided to take advantage and have a party there. Why not? They took the opportunity to debut some new songs in front of a crowd to see what kind of response they would get, along with playing some Ape Fight classics! Look out for their new CD, Take Me To Your Beaver, a great title, at apefight.com.

My brothers from Killcode recently posted a rough cut video for their new song “Breaking Away” on their MySpace page. The video was shot for the FOX-TV show, Fearless Music, which is based in NYC. The song “Breaking Away” is a brand new tune off of Killcode’s upcoming as-yet-untitled CD. Check out the video for “Breaking Away” on myspace.com/killcode.

And finally, the guys from Lamps Burning, who seemed to have no luck with singers, have finally landed the missing piece to their puzzle. Back in August, they found singer Ron Crooks after a month of auditions. A month is not bad, when your looking for a singer in this area as most of you know! Lamps Burning has been preparing for a new EP and you can expect for them to make up for lost time on stages around New Jersey and New York! Check out the latest version of Lamps Burning at myspace.com/lampsburning.

That’s all for now! And remember, if your band is from North Jersey, and you want some exposure, send your demos and press kits to Arts Weekly, c/o Tim Louie P.O. Box 1140 Little Falls, NJ 07424. No cover bands, please!

Just remember….We’re all in the same boat, so every little bit of exposure counts!
