North Jersey Notes: Blue Food, Fort Lee, NJ

I recently received an email from Blue Food singer Angel Eduardo telling me that he read a recent column that I did on the guys from Ghost And The Big Sky, so he decided to ask me to check out his band! I am so happy that Angel reached out! Blue Food is awesome! I mean, I’m a metalhead, but I do have a soft spot for the funk since I am a bass player and all. Blue Food’s music exhibited some exceptional musicianship and some really talented songwriting in songs like “Chef” and “Waterwalking” off of the band’s EP, New Old Stock.

Blue Food actually formed as a joke while listening to James Brown, of all people, back in the fall of 2007. Singer Angel Eduardo casually mentioned to co-worker-turned-bassist Wilhelmus Sapanaro that it would be cool to front his own funk band. Within a few weeks, they started jamming with Angel’s buddy, Odin Alvarez on drums. Those weekly sessions would continue in Angel’s basement with Miles Ungar joining the band on guitar, Michael Carolan on trumpet, Jeremy Gorin on saxophone, and Chris Winn on trombone to round out the horn section. Blue Food is named after a George Carlin bit about the curious absence of any naturally occurring blue edibles. They recorded a three-song EP called New Old Stock in the spring of 2009, which was rounded out by an amazing version of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.”

Blue Food has been playing all over the New York/New Jersey club circuit promoting their three-song EP. Angel tells me that they will be playing a cancer benefit at Mexicali Café in Teaneck, NJ, sometime in July, but if you can catch Blue Food sometime before then, do it! They are awesome! Check them out at bluefood.com.

North Jersey Notes Updates

My brothers from Diablo Royale have finally decided on a replacement for their former beloved bass player, Sweet Leaf, who left the band sometime last summer. The name of their new bass player is Pete Connors, who couldn’t join Diablo Royale at a better time. The band has been on fire with their steady diet of live performances, the popularity of Gotham Rocks, and a kick ass new CD in Greedy Dogs. You can learn more about Diablo Royale at myspace.com/diabloroyalerock or you can catch them live in Long Branch, NJ, on May 1 at The Brighton Bar.

Anyone catch the Murder League All-Stars and Piston Driven show at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ, last weekend? Wow! Do you want to talk about a kick in the teeth? I still haven’t fully recovered yet! Speaking of the Murder League All-Stars, they’ve finally posted some new music for your listening pleasure. The songs “Dimes” and “Children’s Story” can be heard on myspace.com/murderleagueallstars.

And finally, my hometown brothers, Hollywood Kills, have finally released a new CD. I didn’t quite catch the name of it just yet, but I went over to their MySpace page, myspace.com/myonlyhope, and heard a couple of new tracks in “ICU” and “Running Through The Motions.” The songs rock and are extremely commercial! Catch Hollywood Kills live this Friday night, April 30, at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ, with Bled For Glory and Will Killmore for Will Killmore’s CD Release Party!

That’s all for now! If your band is from North Jersey, and you want some exposure, send your press kits to Arts Weekly, c/o Tim Louie P.O. Box 1140 Little Falls, NJ 07424. No cover bands, please! Also, if you haven’t checked out my podcast yet, do it now at northjerseynotes.mypodcast.com!

Just remember….We’re all in the same boat, so every little bit of exposure counts!
