Efren: Write A New Song

When hearing any new record for the first time, people try to listen for different things. These attributes vary depending on the genre or who the band is. Some styles of music are well known for their specific qualities. When it comes to the certain aspects that country and folk music possesses, Write A New Song, by the Georgian group Efren, has managed to pass the test.

The specifics that are fulfilled by the band on this record have been in their past releases—elements of sound in guitar tone along with vocal harmonies. The style of sound and rhythm contained throughout this album is that of traditional country music. Its upbeat tempos produce an urge to sit back on a rocking chair and indulge in some old fashioned knee slapping. The significantly noticeable guitar tones have a slightly distorted yell until the solos of each song, where there is more cleanliness. As far as vocals go, what makes Efren an enjoyable listen is the concoction of a raspy lead singer with sharper, high-pitch sounding harmonies to back it. These harmonies help the band stay true to their genre. With regards to the percussion section, unfortunately there is nothing really new or interesting on Write A New Song. The beats are standard and don’t seem to deviate too much from how drummers of this brand have in the past.

Efren’s new album could be considered a “hit or miss record” by a number of different standards. For somebody looking for an easy listen to play as background music while dining at the Cracker Barrel, this album could be considered a gem. On the other hand, however, any person attempting to explore new forms of the country/folk genre may wish to reconsider.

In A Word: Yee-Haw!
