North Jersey Notes: One Hundred Thousand, Scars Of Envy, Xero Gravity and More!

So, a couple of weeks ago, the singer in one of my many projects, David Marin, also in the band Ronin, posted a video on his Facebook page to promote a local band to friends on his page. The name of the band was One Hundred Thousand. I figured if David liked it, I probably will even though his taste in music is sometimes questionable. After listening to the first three measures          in this video for their song “Low,” I have to hand it to David on this one. These guys were awesome! Strong vocals, great guitar work, thunderous drumming and then there was the bass player! It was none other than my former Aquarian Weekly colleague, Andrew Magnotta! I had no idea Andrew was even in a band let alone one that rocked like this, and let me add, this boy can play bass.

According to their bio, One Hundred Thousand started making waves with their inception around 2012. By May of 2013, the group would release their first of the band’s three-part debut EPs, A World Divided. Within a year of the band’s first release, One Hundred Thousand would part ways with their original singer, Ronnie Cinnella, and would welcome new singer Rich Matos to the fold, which already comprised of guitarist Alex Goldenthal, bassist Andrew Magnotta and drummer Kurt Wubbenhorst. After recruiting Matos, the group headed back into the studio to re-record vocals for the EP that would become Rise, which they released this past October. Rise was actually written during the band’s incubative stage a year and a half before the EP was even released, but the band feels the music was never fully realized until its lineup was finalized.

The EP, Rise, was recorded and mixed by Mike Ferretti at Architekt Music in Butler, NJ, which drummer Kurt Wubbenhorst actually co-owns with my bud, George Roskos. Architekt has been known on the scene as of late, as the studio has been turning out some great music, including CDs from Sevendust. As luck would have it, Sevendust guitarist Clint Lowery co-produces the vocals on Rise, which is a digital-only release, available on iTunes and all other streaming services. The band plans on making Download Dropcards available at shows, which I think is a brilliant move since CDs have become drink coasters these days. NORTH JERSEY NOTES UPDATES:

My bros from Scars Of Envy have just landed an amazing gig opening for the super-hot In This Moment at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on July 10. Also performing will be 36 Crazyfists, The Defiled and First Decree. This is a great gig for the Scars boys and well deserved. For more info and tickets to this show, visit Scars Of Envy at facebook.com/scarsofenvyband.

After four strong years on the Jersey music scene, the young lads from Xero Gravity have decided to part ways in a shocking change of events. Personally, I thought these kids were picking up steam. They were one of my favorite metal trios on the scene and it was refreshing to see these three talented kids accomplish so much within the past four years, including a chance to perform at the now-defunct Bamboozle Festival. According to drummer Steve Rago’s Facebook page, the band “decided to break up due to musical differences and members wanting to focus on their futures.” I’d like to wish the three members of Xero Gravity luck in whatever they do and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them. For more on Xero Gravity, visit them on reverbnation.com/xerogravity.

And finally, some shows you won’t want to miss in Jersey this weekend: Tantric will be at the Brighton Bar in Long Branch, NJ on Friday (6/5) with The West Front, Gravity Well, Tilted and Spiral Scar. My buds, New Day Dawn, will be opening for my buds from Astoria, Eve To Adam, with i-Exist at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ, also on Friday. And on Saturday (6/6), one of my new favorite local bands, Robots And Monsters, will be at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ opening for the mighty Warrior Soul with Metalfier, Extercitum and Acid. These are some killer shows in the area! So, get out there and support local music!

That’s all for now! If your band is from North Jersey, and you want some exposure, send your press kits to Arts Weekly, c/o Tim Louie P.O. Box 1140, Little Falls, NJ 07424, or you can email me at tim@theaquarian.com, where you can also let me know where you’re performing next!

Just remember….We’re all in the same boat, so every little bit of exposure counts!
