It’s been about five years since I last visited my favorite tattoo shop in New Jersey. Yes, I’m talking about Pure Ink in Ledgewood, NJ, only the last time I was there, they were in a different location. Owners Danny Pain, Graig Berkowitz, and Rich Pizzutillo decided to pick up and move shop right up the road on Route 10 to an even bigger and badder location. My bud, Danny Pain, invited me up to see the new and improved Pure Ink, and I was quick to jump at the opportunity. I have to be brutally honest, though. On…

Woodland Park, NJ

I was recently contacted by former Physical Graffiti tattoo artist Geoff Horn because he just opened his own tattoo shop, Hole in the Sky Tattoo Parlor, in the goody-goody suburbs of Woodland Park, NJ. Not sure where Woodland Park is? Well, neither was I, but I soon found out that its right near West Paterson and Totowa by the Great Notch Reservoir. A quaint little town with a brand new tattoo parlor!

Entering this cozy and rustic looking tattoo shop off of Overmount Avenue in Woodland Park, I was greeted by eccentric owner and artist Geoff…

FEATURED ARTIST: Joseph Ari Aloi aka JK5

Every month I feature a tattoo shop here in “Inked Out,” but this month I have a pretty interesting story about a tattoo artist named Joseph Ari Aloi, who also goes by the name JK5.

Aloi he didn’t stop at just tattooing. He’s also a designer, writer, toy creator, media franchiser, filmmaker and Flowbot leader. What’s a Flowbot? They’re actually an “archetypal band of fantastically mythological and heroic space adventuring characters,” which were produced by a company called Kidrobot back in 2007, but were inspired by Aloi’s reality and life experiences around…

GRACELAND TATTOO—Wappingers Falls, NY
I recently received an email about a shop that I visited back in 2009 up in Wappingers Falls, NY. The shop is called Graceland Tattoo, and owner Adam Lauricella emailed me to let me know that he’d recently bought the office space across the street from his old shop because it was more spacious for all of the recent business that’s been generated. Adam opened up the new shop on May 23, so I did something that I’ve never done since I started writing this column: I went and revisited an old shop to see…

SACRED TATTOO—New York City

Having to celebrate Chinese New Year’s in Chinatown this year with my family, I had the opportunity to walk through the streets of downtown Manhattan when I went from the parking garage to the restaurant. What I didn’t expect to find on my way through Broadway was a second floor tattoo shop called Sacred Tattoo. Now, I’ve been down this street a gazillion times and never knew that there was a tattoo shop up there. I was already late for dinner, so what harm was there in one more stop?

I walked into what seemed…

BROOKLAWN, NJ—I recently received an email from a friend who turned me onto this shop in Brooklawn, NJ called 12 Oz. Studios. Under their advisement, I decided to take a ride to Brooklawn to check the place out. 12 Oz. Studios gave me the feeling that all customers should feel when entering any tattoo parlor; besides being surrounded by art on the walls, a customer should also get the feeling of neatness, cleanliness and overall professionalism.

Apparently, 12 Oz. Studios, which used to be called Sick Creations, is a reputable shop in South Jersey, whose goal is to bring…

Let me say one thing about South Jersey: there are a lot of tattoo shops down here! So, I was driving to work one morning when my eyes caught the word ‘tattoo.’ My first thought was, I’m late for work, so I need to remember where this place was, so I can come back after work. The shop was located on The White Horse Pike, like many businesses in this South Jersey region. After work, I stopped in. The shop was called Body Art Tattoo And Piercings, and it was located in Stratford, NJ.…

On a recent trip though Pennsylvania—just north of Philly to be exact, I happened to drive by a great little tattoo shop in a small town called Willow Grove. The shop was called Sink the Ink and it seemed pretty busy for a local business in this flailing economy, so I decided to stop in and take a look.

Sink the Ink is a very spacious shop with binders of flash art adorning the walls. I have to admit the décor of the shop kind of reminded me of that burger joint,…

PHILADELPHIA, PA—On a recent visit to the City of Brotherly Love, I came across a beautiful storefront that stood out compared to the other shops on South Fourth Street in Philadelphia. The place had Hawaiian décor that can lure anybody in out of mere curiosity. And it sure as hell lured me in hook-line-and-sinker. As luck would have it, it was a tattoo shop! I guess the big letters above the door that read ‘No Ka Oi Tiki Tattoo’ should’ve been a dead giveaway, huh? So, I walked in wanting to see more.

On a recent jaunt to the southwest with my lady friend, we came across a great little tattoo shop in Scottsdale, Arizona that we wanted to check out pretty badly. The shop caught our eye on one of the evenings that we went out to meet some friends for drinks. We saw a shop with Indian décor making us think that there were products from India in there. So we looked inside the window since the shop was already closed, and realized that it was a tattoo parlor.
