A comedy metal mix of Gwar and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Green Jell˙ boast notorious live shows that occasionally end in massive cleaning charges: fake blood, ice cream sandwiches and–most famously –green Jell-O are routinely thrown between band and audience. Green Jell˙ will be trashing the Blender Theater at Gramercy in NYC on July 9.

Cited by Joey Ramone as the worst opener he ever had (a compliment they accepted in stride), Green Jell˙ was started in 1981 as Green Jellö. As part of their effort to become the world’s worst band, they christened themselves in honor of what is popularly considered the worst flavor of Jell-O, but they were forced to change their name after legal threats from Kraft Foods. Cheekily, despite the letter switch, the pronunciation remains the same.

In 1991 they released a “video album,” Cereal Killer, tracks from which dominated MTV in summer 1993. The band has had between–by varying estimates–70 and 200 official members in its history. The performances have grown to consist of characters like Shitman and Satan’s Ham, making for a formidable costumed collective on stage.

Their last official single was recorded in 1995. Their current reunion tour supports the DVD releases of two of their video albums.

The Blender Theater is located at 127 East 23rd Street. Doors open at 7 p.m. For more info visit myspace.com/greenjelly
