SKY PICNIC—New York City

I always find it funny how musicians or bands would drop into my life at the weirdest times. For instance, a couple of weeks ago, our floor guy introduced me to his nephew’s band, Metal Gate Mafia. Whenever I mention that I write this column, the musicians seem to come out of the woodwork. Trust me, I love meeting fellow musicians, I just find it funny that sometimes they come out of nowhere, which brings me to this week’s featured band.

The love of my life is going for her Masters, so we went to…

I haven’t heard from the boys of Killcode in a little while. Well, until now, that is! The boys rocked the Highline Ballroom in NYC last week for the first time, but most importantly, my bro and singer Tom Morrissey told me that Killcode is currently in the middle of recording their first full-length CD with producer Stacy O’Dell, who is also working on the new CD from my bros, Panzie*. The Killcode CD is still untitled as of now, but I’m sure once songs are ready to be heard, you’ll be able to hear them at myspace.com/killcode.

The Meyer Rossabi Band invades North Jersey on Aug. 14 opening for The Christine Martucci Band at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ. Who is The Meyer Rossabi Band? Well, I’m about to tell you. They’re a great blues rock trio out of Brooklyn, NY, that recently came across my desk. I gave them a listen on their MySpace page, and I liked tracks like “World Gone Crazy,” “Modern Women,” and the very bluesy “Crash.” Now, these were real blues rock songs that I can see doing really well at Mexicali. The guitar work was simply amazing!

A young band out of Holmdel, NJ, was recently tossed my way. They’re called Filter Effect, and since they were tossed my way, I figured that I’d give them a listen. I was able to hear a few rough tracks like “Area 51” and “Cry Of An Angel” on the band’s MySpace page, myspace.com/filtereffect, and I felt that they had a lot of musical talent and promise. When I say promise, I mean that there’s a lot more room for them to grow as musicians and songwriters. I mean, they’re 18-years-old for crying out loud! If I was…

If you play in a Jersey band, have you ever wondered where this New Jersey music scene evolved from? Well, my guess is that this scene evolved from bands like The Doughboys. I recently received an email to give them a listen because their song, “Black Sheep,” was labeled as “The Coolest Song In The World” on Little Steven’s Underground Garage station on Sirius/XM radio. I went and gave them a listen and thought that they reminded me of the American version of the Rolling Stones. Their music had a classic rock feel, thanks to the tinny guitar sound of…

Yes, yes, yes! I know that my column is for the local North Jersey musician looking to get some exposure for playing original music. Well, for some reason, I feel that this DJ Cloak And Dagger is a little bit of a unique character with a strange attachment to the local North Jersey music scene. Okay, DJ Cloak And Dagger is none other than Luke Rizzo, brother of Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo. Luke’s connection to the North Jersey music scene is Phlamencore Records, which he started with Marc back in 2004. What started as a platform for a few talented…
