Primus is an acquired taste. Once you let the band’s quirky tunes covered in heavy bass riffs and peddler-sounding vocals sit on your tongue for a bit, you either love it or hate it. But let anyone in on the fact, whether they know that they’ve heard of Primus or not, that the band performed the theme song to the animated sitcom South Park, and their answer will always be the same: “Oh yeah? That’s cool!”

But the Primus is more than just a 27-second musical clip on Comedy Central. The oddity faire that is Primus began in 1984 with…

BRIDGEPORT, CT—The 15th annual Gathering Of The Vibes once again took place in Bridgeport, CT, from July 29 through Aug. 1. The festival made its home for the fourth year in a row at Seaside Park where roughly 20,000 revelers per day enjoyed four days of beautiful weather, incredible music and NO MUD! The only rain felt was the intermittent sprinkling that came down early Thursday morning during the camper check-in. Soon the menacing clouds and storm predictions blew away along with most of the cares and attachments of everyday life. Thursday began the reunion of the Vibe Tribe family…

The man who loves to jam, Primus’ own Les Claypool, will be playing shows at the Wellmont Theatre, House Of Blues, and the Brooklyn Bowl on June 5, 6, and 8 respectively. Audiences should expect a great deal of bass solos, eccentric stage banter, and all manner of odd musical tones to take them on a journey offered by the man who’s the bass equivalent of Captain Beefheart. Stretching beforehand is recommended as it allows for maximum grooving with a low risk for being bummed out. This is his third time back in the area within the last…

Even the weird need a leader. Les Claypool, whose work as the frontman and bassist extraordinaire of Primus turned him into a household name (if it’s a household of fringe alternative rock lovers) in the early ‘90s, has a history of bringing together unusual collaborators over the years through various acts like Oysterhead and Colonel Claypool’s Bucket Of Bernie Brains. But this March’s Oddity Faire is his first time organizing a tour dedicated to the weird out there, with Saul Williams, Secret Chief 3 and O’Death rounding out the last leg of the tour which ends in New York this…

A Monday night in the swirling urban banality of NYC, the air cool but not cold easing its way through the end of April, and I, marching into a packed Joe’s Pub, wondering what happened to all the smoke in this lounge, daddy-o?

Les Claypool protege Gabby La La is on stage with the man himself, she in red dress, sultry in a comic book kind of way, cooing in her high soprano that we’d all better “be careful what you wish for, ’cos it might come true—oooh,” Claypool in trademark pig mask manhandling a stick standup bass.
