Touching and expanding on elements familiar to the band’s growing fanbase, it’s an album that nonetheless pushes into new territory as well, incorporating new rhythmic techniques, a more developed vocal approach and a guest appearance (a first for YOB on their sixth full-length overall) from Neurosis guitarist/vocalist Scott Kelly.

There is probably a holiday for just about everything one could want, gifts, uprisings, animals, Presidents and now a music holiday; Record Store Day. Everyone likes having music, so it’s only befitting that there should be a day in which one is encouraged to not feel guilty about blowing a paycheck on awesome vinyl and special releases. Below is a list of the more awesome things to pick up from your favorite record store on April 16. Spare no expenses because I’m certain some…

Wino, whose legacy spans a 30-plus-year career in bands like The Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, Place Of Skulls, Shrinebuilder—and most lately—Premonition, continues to be one of if not the most preeminent figures in American doom metal.

The post-hardcore (though not by the modern genre definition) approach of their first two albums, 1988’s Pain Of Mind and 1991’s The Word As Law, led the seminal Oakland, California, outfit to new ground of sonic experimentation, and Souls At Zero is the first instance of that experimentation made flesh.

If 2004’s The Eye Of Every Storm was an expansive foray into the band’s experimental atmospheric tendencies, then certainly Given To The Rising is Neurosis reinterpreting the sound that established them as underground metal legends in the first place and basically showing everyone who’s tried to sound like them ever since how it’s done. What actually makes the album work is that it’s in no way a rehash, just a different direction.

Three years after Neurosis released The Eye Of Every Storm, the album still leaves much to be digested. With its increase in atmospheric ambience over 2001’s A Sun That Never Sets, it was a nod toward the Bay Area band’s experimental side, a record that spread out wide as soon as you pressed play.
