Usually when a group tries to blend two genres together equally, the alchemy ends up being wrong. School Of Seven Bells however get it mostly right on Disconnect From Desire, crafting an album that blends slow burning ‘80s synth pop with strong harmonies into songs that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Kate Bush record.

Alejandra and Claudia Deheza sing gorgeous, shimmering harmonies over the keyboard noise and synth beats produced by ex-Secret Machines member Benjamin Curtis. From beginning to end, the album is enjoyable and consistent with only a few tracks in the middle that drag on. “Heart…

NEW YORK, NY—To say you’re going to see School Of Seven Bells live is not saying you’re going to a rock show but a performance art exhibit.

I had been excited about SVIIB ever since I first heard about them. An electro-pop supergroup of sorts, with Benjamin Curtis formerly of Secret Machines and identical twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza formerly of On! Air! Library!, they create music that has a quiet confidence about it. An ambient dance party that, on their album Alpinisms, feels slightly reserved for fear that if they were to release their full sound it would blow…

The story of School Of Seven Bells, though retold often, is relatively new, so what’s one more time? The dreamy pop trio first met when Benjamin Curtis (Secret Machines) and twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza (both of On! Air! Library!) met while their respective bands were opening for Interpol in 2007. Soon after, they left their previous bands and started School Of Seven Bells.

See? Easy story.

Secret Machines fans in particular weren’t initially enthused, but SVIIB (as it is frequently abbreviated) and their ne’er modulating layered psychedelic sounds on Alpinisms have attracted all kinds of attention, most notably…
