North Jersey Notes: Cilver, Dying Eyes Of Sloth, King Kelly and More!

I recently got to check out a brand new New York City band called Cilver. They actually only made their live debut a couple of weeks ago at The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC opening for (who else?) Killcode. I never heard of these guys before, so I was dying to check them out when I read on the flyer that the show would be their debut performance. So, I logged onto their Facebook page, facebook.com/cilver, where I was able to hear the song “In My Head,” which features Guns N’ Roses guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, and a song called “Break Free.” Both songs are well written and well arranged, making Cilver’s future look bright.

Cilver was formed out of the mean streets of NYC late last year by former members of Universal Recording artist Me Talk Pretty, Island Def Jam Recording artist The Urgency, and no strangers to North Jersey Notes, The Pennyroyals. Cilver recently released their debut single featuring Bumblefoot on guitar and the single has been receiving raving reviews from all media outlets from online blogs to print media to satellite and terrestrial radio! The band is made up of singer Uliana Preotu and guitarist and keyboardist Leon Lyazidi, both formerly of Me Talk Pretty, guitarist Gerry Soman from The Pennyroyals, bassist Josh Pillbox from Reckless Sons and drummer Guerin Blask from The Urgency.

Cilver are currently putting the finishing touches on their debut EP, which as of now seems to be untitled. My guess is that it will be self-titled, the way it was self-produced by Lyazidi. After an amazing debut show at Webster Hall opening for the mighty Killcode and Mother—some of NYC’s best—Cilver are destined for greatness in the city that never sleeps. It won’t take too long for people on the music scene to know who Cilver are. Check them out now at cilverband.com.

NORTH JERSEY NOTES UPDATES:

I ran into Dave Incognito and Jay Prussack from InDisguise a couple of weekends ago at my Dingbatz gig and they were super excited to tell me that they’ve reunited their death metal band, Dying Eyes Of Sloth, to release an EP called Book Of Blood. According to Jay and Dave, there was a high demand for the Dying Eyes Of Sloth stuff, so they decided to make their fans happy. They insisted that InDisguise was still their main focus, but they wanted to do something fun. Dave sent me the EP and I have to say that after giving “Dead Alive” and “Beneath The Haunting Skies” a listen, he might want to switch his focus back to Dying Eyes Of Sloth. I thoroughly enjoyed what I heard so far! I swear, Dave Incognito might be the split personality of singers. Sometimes he sounds amazing on the death metal stuff and sometimes he sounds better on the hard rock stuff. I can’t decide! Get your copy of Book Of Blood now at dyingeyesofsloth.bandcamp.com.

Anyone hear the new King Kelly song “Matchstick Mondays” off of their upcoming EP, Pinched By The Firehorses, yet? The song is great and might be the best I’ve heard from the band yet! Lyrically and musically, this track proves that these guys are out of their element as local musicians. Check the song out on King Kelly’s YouTube channel, youtu.be/tirTnaahaSk.

And finally, one of my favorite guitar players on the scene, Tony Gabriele, also known as Tony Bro of the band Orbynot—which is his name backwards, by the way—is looking for musicians to help him finish his upcoming CD. He says he has 38 tracks already recorded and has a vision of a singer that sounds like Sebastian Bach meets Lzzy Hale. If you think that describes you and you’re a real musician, contact Tony at tat_32@msn.com. Tony is also looking for a drummer, a bassist and a second guitar player for his live band. Tony also emailed me a new track that he recorded with the Mexican hottie that he went on the road with, Poc. The song is called “Hit It Up” and reminded me of Warlock for some reason, but it was an awesome track! Check out Orbynot at reverbnation.com/orbynot.

That’s all for now! If your band is from North Jersey, and you want some exposure, send your press kits to Arts Weekly, c/o Tim Louie P.O. Box 1140, Little Falls, NJ 07424, or you can email me at tim@theaquarian.com, where you can also let me know where you’re performing next!

Just remember….We’re all in the same boat, so every little bit of exposure counts!
