North Jersey Notes: Unconscious Disturbance, Civic, Killcode and More!

Some of my favorite local bands have come out of Brooklyn like Black Water Rising, Panzie*, Anaka, etc. Well, it’s no wonder that I would find another metal band out of Brooklyn to enjoy. Not to mention their brand of metal has more a Brazilian sound that is reminiscent of Sepultura and Soulfly with more of a hard rock vocal. I’m talking about Unconscious Disturbance. I noticed that they were playing at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ this Friday night, so I figured I’d give them a listen, and they were actually pretty good. The songs “Flight” and “Down The Well” on their Bandcamp page had some tasty guitar riffs and sounds that actually leave you wanting to hear more. Singer Kiko Freiberg attacked these songs with some aggressive vocals, which gives you that “I just got punched in the teeth” feeling.

According to the band’s bio, Unconscious Disturbance started their journey as kids when brothers Kiko and Daniel Freiberg began playing with their cousin Patrick Caracas when they were around the age of eight. They were joined by a bass player named Fadel and in December 2012, Unconscious Disturbance released their first EP, which was actually mastered by Howie Weinberg, who’s known for his work with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and Metallica. A month after the CD’s release and in the middle of what would become an eight-month U.S. tour, the band was asked to headline Palco Do Rock Festival in Brazil in front of around 10,000 people. In August of 2013, Unconscious Disturbance performed at Festival Porão Do Rock at Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brazil, which included legendary acts like Suicidal Tendencies, Soulfly and Krissiun. After that amazing performance, they were selected as one of the Brazilian rock bands to open the highly anticipated Monsters Of Rock Festival in São Paulo, Brazil, which included performances from Aerosmith, Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, and Gojira. For a local band, it sounds like Unconscious Disturbance have already accomplished more than any local band can dream of. Joining the brothers, singer and guitarist Kiko and drummer Daniel Freiberg and their cousin, guitarist Patrick Caracas, is bassist Danny Dahan.

The boys from Unconscious Disturbance just finished up work on their new CD and plan to hit the ground running early to promote their new music. You can catch them live at Dingbatz this Friday night. NORTH JERSEY NOTES UPDATES:

My boy Mikey Ferrara aka Mikey Trudge and his new band Civic recently released a few new songs via SoundCloud, and I have to say, the tracks rock. These songs aren’t what I’m used to hearing from any project that Mikey Trudge had played on because he’s always played in heavier bands. Civic are more alternative rock and it’s pretty good! The songs “Mute The Noise,” “Aftermath,” and “Which Way Back” are so well-crafted, you can listen to them for days. Looks like Mikey’s finally found a home. Catch Civic live when they play Dingbatz on Sept. 12 with Corevalay, Gathering After Ashes, and Harvest Falls, or check them out at civicband.com.

Local guitar hero Steve Bello recently hit me up with some amazing news! He recently shared the stage with the legendary TM Stevens and TC Tolliver at the Brighton Bar in Long Branch, NJ, and the show went over so well that TM has decided to take the show to Germany at the end of September, and he’s taking Steve Bello with him. Steve says he’s super excited because it’s his first-ever tour. Steve says he’ll be in Dresden on Sept. 25, in Markneukirchen on Sept. 26, and in Brilon on Sept. 27. This is awesome news for the skinny kid from North Arlington. For more on Steve Bello, log onto reverbnation.com/stevebello, or for more on TM Stevens, log onto facebook.com/tm.stevens.14.

And finally, speaking of amazing news, my bros from Killcode have announced what might be their biggest show to date. They were recently asked again to share the stage with the mighty Twisted Sister and Adrenaline Mob at the Best Buy Theater in NYC on Sept. 5. The show will be hosted by my bro and That Metal Show co-host, Don Jamieson, and is actually a benefit show for “The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation.” The Killcode boys are also busy in the studio writing and recording the follow-up to their debut CD with Life Of Agony’s Joey Z.
