Everest: Arena-Sized

On their third album, Ownerless, California’s Everest can be heard pitting bleak moods against big-beat rock ‘n’ roll—the voice of frontman Russell Pollard (ex-Sebadoh) sits like a yowling, crooning streak of neon paint across the band’s overcast guitar-scape, making for a careful balance that lands squarely between bittersweet and head-bob catchy. Their churning grooves and washed-out solos have already supported heavy hitters like Wilco and Death Cab For Cutie in the past, and now they’ve been hand-picked by the venerable Neil Young for another bout on the road. They’ll play at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 27, Philly’s Wells Fargo Center on Nov. 29, and the Barclays Center on Dec. 3.
