My featured band this week isn’t from North Jersey, but these guys need to play up here! Their origin is South Jersey—and I don’t mean like Seaside Heights South Jersey! I mean piney South Jersey! I swear that these bands down south are some sort of metal mutants! The name of the group is Meatplow, and my band BlackOcean recently performed with them at their CD release party for their debut disc, Death In 3’s. In fact, we do a lot of shows with these guys. They are the epitome of stoner metal! Songs like “One Time” and “Free Wind” really exhibit that stoner metal sound full of catchy guitar riffs and mean vocals. These guys would fit right into the metal scene up here.
Meatplow formed in July 2010. Its members knew exactly what kind of sound they were after. They wanted to create a sound that infused their influences of bands like Clutch and Corrosion Of Conformity, creating a stoner metal and Southern rock style of music. Meatplow strived to be groove-oriented, which I feel they’ve accomplished with no problem. Their different backgrounds helped create a style that makes them comparable to no other act on the local music scene. Meatplow’s current lineup includes a singer and guitarist named Punkin, guitarist Mike Young, bassist Jay Barringer, and drummer Mike Eckert.
The boys from Meatplow inked an independent deal with Pennsylvania-based Born Of Chaos last year, and recently released their debut CD, Death In 3’s. They plan on playing a lot this summer to promote the new disc, so keep an eye out for Meatplow! Hit them up on their ReverbNation page, reverbnation.com/meatplow, and get them to come up to North Jersey to play!
NORTH JERSEY NOTES UPDATES:
I just got a text from my bro Pete Wells of Apathy, whom I haven’t heard from in quite some time. Pete told me that he’s been revamping the lineup and working on Apathy’s long-awaited upcoming CD, Hell Is All We Have, a 12-song full-length which will feature songs like the title-track, “Wounds Of War” and “Instruments Of Death.” Pete and the boys from Apathy will be taking a break from working on the CD to play at the Gramercy Theatre in NYC with Sanctuary on July 10. For more info on Apathy, log onto apathy-nj.com.
Another one of my bros from the North Jersey music scene, Anthony “The Main Vein” Coviello and his boys from Long Gone Day have landed an amazing gig opening for legendary punk rockers Social Distortion at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park on June 22. This huge show comes off the heels of the release of Long Gone Day’s latest release, The Fifth. For tickets and a live stream of The Fifth, log onto longgoneday.com.
And finally, speaking of my bros, me and my BlackOcean crew will be returning to Dingbatz in Clifton this Friday night (6/14) with “our” bros Lower The Veil, Audio Machine, Panzie* and Scarlet Carson. This is set to be an amazing night. We had a packed house the last time we did a show with all of these bands in Jersey, and I’m sure this time will be no different! For more info on this show, log onto facebook.com/blackoceanmusic.
That’s all for now! If your band is from North Jersey, and you want some exposure, send your press kits to Arts Weekly, c/o Tim Louie P.O. Box 1140, Little Falls, NJ 07424, or you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, where you can also let me know where you’re performing next!
Just remember….We’re all in the same boat, so every little bit of exposure counts!
